Corporate Blogging: A new marketing communication tool for companies

A corporate weblog is published and used by an organization to reach its organizational goals. Nowadays, there are many corporate leading the way in blogging activities. Corporate blogs are giving established companies and obscure brands alike the ability to connect with their audiences on a more personal level, build trust, collect valuable feedback and foster strengthened business relationships. More importantly, these companies are enjoying tangible returns in their blogging investment in the form of increased sales, partnerships, business opportunities, press coverage and lead generation.

There have 3 types of corporate blogs. 1st is internal blogs, generally accessed through the corporation’s intranet which is used in lieu of meeting and e-mail discussion. 2nd is external blogs, is a publicly available weblog where company employees teams or spokespersons share their views and it often used to announce new products and services. 3rd is CEO blogs, although there are debated on whether CEOs should blog or not, blogging among CEOs is becoming popular.

In addition, companies that harness their customers’ knowledge and ideas find better ways to satisfy their needs and wants, thus facilitating goodwill in the community. For example, it is a common practice in blogging to provide a link back to a thought originator, which is valuable because backlinks are a way that search engines distinguish the order of the editorial rankings. Higher search engine rankings translate into significantly higher web site traffic and more sales leads. Thus, successful blogging breeds success in other marketing and sales initiatives.

E-Government in Malaysia: e-filing

e-Filing is an application on filling and filing income tax returns electronically via the internet, which is an alternative to the usual manual from submission. It was first introduced in 2003 by Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN). This e-Filing application can be used by all taxpayers who have access to the internet.

There are some basic requirements for e-Filing, such as digital certificate, income tax reference number, internet connection, internet explorer 5.0 software, Adobe Reader 7.05 software and so on. Before commencing e-Filing, taxpayer should prepare his/her IC number, tax reference number which available on the tax form. The e-filing PIN No, LHDN will send the PIN number through the taxpayer’s designated mailing address.

It is easy for taxpayers submit their return form via internet at any time and any place. The data and tax computation also are verified automatically which are more accurate compared to the manual procedure. Furthermore, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures safety of data. When the tax returns are filed manually, refunds are slow and time consumed. Through the e-Filing, the forms can be processed in a short time and this enables refunds to be processed fast.

Taxpayers can now submit their tax details to Inland Revenue Board via e-filing without worrying about making mistakes by making use of TaxSaya, a tax tool (http://www.taxsaya.com/). It is developed by EA-Link System Sdn Bhd, the software comes in three languages, Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin to help taxpayers in understanding the e-filing procedures. After the users fill up sections of the form, it will automatically calculate the amount of tax payable, including offering e-Filing template without having to go through the problems of calculating the tax.

A review on a post on e-tailing from My E-Commerce blog.

Recently I have review on a post on e-Tailing from My E-Commerce blog, http://ecommerze.blogspot.com/search/label/e-Tailing. Now I would like to share my opinion with you.

In my mind, the online sales goods consumers purchased should be something related to computer like hardware and software. I think most of the people will think so too. However, from the blog, I found that, there is a change in 2006 showing that consumers spent more on clothes rather than computers.

It is surprisingly for me to know that, the spending for apparel, accessories and footwear sales hit US$18.3 (RM64) billion as compare to US$17.2 (RM60) billion for computers. This result is reported by Shop.org. There is a different of US$1.1(RM4) billion. In my opinion, this is because after sales service is more important for computer compare to clothes. Consumers will prefer purchases computer in physical market rather than by online transaction. Besides, the quality of online product is suspicion. Computer is much more expensive compare to clothes. If there is default in online product and cannot be exchange, consumers would not like to buy things which are expensive.

The online travel expenses is US$73.4 billion of the online transactions, topping the e-tailing market. This shows that, many people spend on online traveling. In my opinion, this is because online traveling may have discount compare to physical market. Traveling company try to avoid agent fees which need in physical market to reduce cost. This will bring more profit for the traveling company. For consumers, they also benefit from discount given online.

Credit Card debts: Causes and Prevention

Bankruptcy is a very real possibility for many people these days. Credit card debt is the one of the factor that cause most of the people suffered. It is because credit card is convenience to them buying without carry cash around. Many people lack the knowledge of how to handle credit and have attitudes that suggest that debt is acceptable. Other than that, Poor planning, overspending, lack of savings, high-interest loans also will lead to owing too much of credit card debt.

Following are 4 steps to prevent credit card debt.

Step 1: create a budget. A clear budget that includes all the monthly bill entertainment, food will prevent from over spending.

Step 2: maintain clear financial records and a regular payment schedule. When you pay your bills on time and you able to determine hoe much you have to spend for the month ahead.

Step 3: only use credit when you can pay it off within a few months. The longer it takes you to pay off the debt, the more interest that debt will incur and the more you will end up paying.

Step 4: Shred or tear up credit card applications that come to you in the mail. Just because you get the application doesn't mean you need or want the card. Destroying the application will prevent you from using it and protect you from potential identity thieves

Mobile payment is a point-of-sale payment made through a mobile device. Mobile payment system characterized themselves by their flexibility of application possibilities (mobile commerce), high convenience (wallet function), and high diversity with account methods, access methods, and so forth.

With 25 million mobile phone subscribers in Malaysia, there are huge opportunities to speed the development of mobile payment as well as to provide an effective method of delivering financial services even in the remote areas. In recent years, various mobile banking and payment initiatives have been launched. This however, has yet to achieve widespread acceptance. To date, there are only 1.8% of the 25 million subscribed for mobile payment service in the country. Finally, to encourage consumers to adopt the m-payment, it is hoped that the market participants will be able to offer new mobile payment services that opens up new markets for mobile service providers and payment operators, offer the convenience at reasonable costs and thus deliver the cost savings and efficiency gains that consumers seek. In addition, for mobile payment system to succeed, it is needed to strengthen consumer confidence in the safety, security and reliability of mobile networks as a means for consumers to access financial services.

How to safeguard our personal and financial data?

1. Keep our personal and sensitive data off your computer- Nowadays, there are many network threats that hack into our computer. We might not know when our computer is being infected by the virus or spyware program; therefore, we must try our best to keep our personal and sensitive data such as bank account numbers, passwords etc off from our computer. Lots of people tend to leave their computers on for long periods of time and it can be compromised at any time, so if there is no data to steal, then we have already done a lot to prevent data theft. If we really want it on our computer, then at least make sure we encrypt it using certain security program.
2. Avoid saving credit card info, etc on shopping sites- It is quite risky to save our credit card info on shopping site such as Amazon, eBay to avoid repeatedly type; someone might eventually hack into their database and downloads thousands of credit card numbers, bank account numbers, etc.
3. Only connect to secure wireless networks if you can- We must always aware of not to connect to any unknown wireless network. Connecting to non-secure wireless networks is asking for trouble. Therefore, we must make sure we connect to known wireless network instead of simply connecting to an unknown network.
4. Clear your browser’s cache after an online transaction- We must always remember not to save our password in the computer. Sometimes we will get message from our browser asking us whether we want it to automatically save your passwords, etc, click NO.
5. Make sure anti-virus and anti-spyware are installed and up-to-date- We can either buy excellent anti-virus programs like Kaspersky Anti-Virus or free programs like AVG, which is pretty good too. Either way, make sure we have something installed. However, most people usually stop there and don’t install any anti-spware programs. That’s a big mistake! Nowadays, spyware programs send our data to their creators so they can make money. Some good anti-spyware apps are Windows Defender, SpySweeper, SpywareBlaster, AdWare, and Spybot Search and Destroy.
6. Use a secure Internet browser when you are online- Firefox is considered more secure than IE and that’s what a number of sites also have tested. IE 7 has more security features than ever before, but it still has lots of holes also. Using a more secure browser can help protect against browser hijacking, etc. Anyway, most viruses are written for IE since it’s more common, so it’s more likely to be hacked.

The Threat of Online Security: How Safe is Our Data?

The same Internet connection that lets you reach out and touch millions of Web servers, e-mail addresses, and also endangers your PC and the information it contains about you. It has been published that over 100 million cases of identity theft, stealing names, credit card data and other personal information from unsuspecting Internet users have taken place since 2005.

A happened of threats to confidential information due to the increase of Trojans and bot networks enabling an attacker to gain access to a victim’s computer. Attacks that obtain sensitive data stored on an infected computer can result in significant financial loss, particularly if credit card or banking information is exposed. Confidential information used in identity theft is often confiscated as a result of a data breach. Data breaches and the potential use of confidential information for identity theft can result in a loss of public confidence, legal liability, or costly litigation. Not only can compromises that result in the loss of personal data undermine customer and institutional confidence and result in costly damage to an organization’s reputation.

In this unsafe Internet world, home users can lose valuable personal data with one click to the wrong website. Sometimes, when you receive an email request an update to your payment details, and a hacker gains access to your bank account. You've probably seen your share of phishing attacks, which look like communications from your bank, PayPal, eBay, or another online account. The message may ask you to click a link that leads to a bogus Web page, complete with realistic user-name and password log-in fields, or it might ask for a credit-card number. When you take the bait, the phisher harvests your data, and either sells it to someone else, or uses it to drain your account right away.

In any case, an Internet user should protect yourself against data theft and should have some safeguard to protect your confidential information.

Symantec had publish a report about the global Internet security threat. The Symantec Global Internet Security Threat Report provides a six-month update of worldwide Internet threat activity.

Phishing: Examples and its Prevention Methods

Phishing is defined by committing fraud to get financial information to trick people into providing bank or credit-card information by sending a fraudulent e-mail purporting to be from bank, internet provider, etc. They will be asked to disclose personal information such as credit card number, validation code, password or personal identification number.
Here is the common example for phishing that found in Msn e-mail for asking personal information. In order to prevent yourself for becoming next victims, there are some ways to protect yourself.
First, NEVER GIVE sensitive personal information in an e-mail, instant message or pop-up window. Just delete it. Most legitimate and established businesses will not use these methods to ask for passwords, account, or credit card numbers or other confidential information.
Second, be wary of clicking a link in a message or pop-up window. If you get an e-mail, instant message or pop-up window that asks for personal information, DO NOT CLICK any link the link as it would take you to a phony site where any information you give may be sent to the scam artist who built it.
Third, improve your computer’s security. Microsoft suggests that you use a firewall, install antivirus software and update it routinely, and keep your Windows and Office software up to date.
If someone had stolen your identity, you should IMMEDIATTELY file a report with the police and IMMDEDIATELY change the passwords on all your accounts. On the other hand, send the fraudulent message with its original header to the company that has been misrepresented. The company may have a special e-mail address to report such abuse. For example, if you received phisher e-mail from a fake “MSN”, you should send it to abuse@msn.com site.

REMEMBER: No legitimate company will ever send out an e-mail for asking confidential information! No matter how real they look, they are phishing scams!!

The History and Evolution of E-commerce

Sometimes it seems like e-commerce has always been a part of our lives. Most of us make business transactions online on such a regular basis. E-commerce became possible in 1991 when the Internet was opened to commercial use. Since that date thousands of businesses have taken up residence at web sites. EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is developed in the late 1970s it is widely viewed as the beginning of ecommerce which gave an opportunity for users to exchange business information and do electronic transactions.

In 1984, the ASC X12 standard became stable and reliable in transferring large amounts of transactions. In1992 the Mosaic web-browser was made available, it was the first ‘point and click’ browser. During the year 1994, Netscape arrived. It provides users a simple browser to surf the Internet and a safe online transaction technology called Secure Sockets Layer. In 1995, Amazon.com and eBay.com were launched and we really started seeing the type of e-commerce that we’re used to today. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is another key moment in the development to of e-commerce. DSL allowed quicker access and a persistent connection to the Internet.

From the Internet to Intranets to Extranets has been a speedy development in the past 5 years. The 3 C’s of first generation E-commerce: Content, Community, and Commerce have now evolved into 7 C’s of second generation E-commerce: Content, Community, Commerce (e.g. Amazon), Communication (e.g. Doubleclick), Connectivity (e.g. Cisco), Collaboration (Mercata), and Customization (e.g. Netperceptions). Each of these C’s reflect an evolution of features that it enabling automated processes to extending these processes externally with other consumers as well as business partners.

B2C (Business to Consumer) models have been tried and tested during the first generation of E-commerce boom, but the newer trends are toward B2B (Business to Business) and Click-and-Mortar models. Generic models of B2C commerce are outdated and newer efforts are needed to leverage the untapped potential offered in the digital medium.

An Example of an E-Commerce Success and its Cause – Amazon.com

Amozon.com was launched in 1999 and was best known as the first online retailer of the internet world. It leads to sale books with its wide range that related to a variety of subjects and topics. It also is the only website that contains web books, business brands and retails on a single web-based business. Besides leads to sale books, it also offers a variety of electronic items such as video, wireless cell phone, software, music and many more stuff.

The strong organizational and effective team management strategies has make Amazon.com immensely gained economic profits in the e-commerce world. The customer relation management is one of the key elements of its success. Teams are small and the staffs are assigned authority and empowered to solve a problem as a service in anyway they feel fit. They also work from the customer backward and focus on value delivered to the customer. Furthermore, the efficiency in dealing the customers and making them a priority as providing exceptional customer services make Amazon.com on top of all the other e-commerce companies.

There are some policies that used by Amazon.com, such as “E-mail Your Friends About Your Book” that authors can introduce to their friends and families with the books. With the “Rate This Items” feature, they also can rank their own book and the more chances it has of being highly ranked in the overall Amazon system, the better sale on Amazon.

With its best marketing techniques and expertise in relation to the market trends and demands of its customers, it leads Amazon.com achieve tremendous success in the field of e-commerce.

An example of E-Commerce failure and its cause – Pets.Com.

One of the top ten Dot-com failure is Pets.com. Pets.com was launched in November 1998 and initially was deemed successful as it sought to conquer the market of selling pet supplies direct to customers and accessories over the internet. Furthermore, the appearance of pets.com sock puppet mascot was became so popular that appear in a multimillion-dollar Super Bowl commercial and as a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. But it is a dramatic change like many other Dot.com failures continued to experience drops in the share price over the next ten month and have to declare bankrupt.

The causes of its failure may consist of poor business plan such as the company had to undercharge for shipping costs to attract customers but it actually lost money on most of the items it sold, so that purchasing online offered no real benefit whether it is in regards to price or convenience. Moreover, after their customers made an order, they need to wait for few days to actually get it. Furthermore, the hierarchy of the company was in shambles as the CEO and managing body had little experience in running a company, it may lead to the lack of a sufficient business proposal. Other than that, the idea of pets.com was inadequate. They failed to give the customer enough reason to purchase pet goods via the internet rather than their traditional source.

How E-commerce can reduce cycle time, improve employees’ empowerment, and facilitate customer support?

E-commerce becomes more important recently. There are many impacts of e-marketplaces on B2C direct marketing. E-commerce can reduce cycle time, improve employees’ empowerment, and facilitate customer support.

A business process begins with a customer’s need and ends with a customer’s need fulfillment. Business Processes are designed to add value for the customer and should not include unnecessary activities. In e-marketplaces, the business process can be reduced. The delivery time of digitized products and services can be reduced to seconds. Also, the administrative work related to physical delivery, especially across international borders, can be reduced significantly, cutting the cycle time by more than 90 percent. Besides, cycle time can be reduced through improvements along the supply chain.

E-commerce also can improve employees’ empowerment since more information is provided easily. Employees can search any information in the network. This is useful for them to make decision. A more cost-effective, robust network has helped deliver significant savings to BankAtlantic shareholders while improving network performance by providing faster application response times to customer service representatives at individual stores and its customer service centers. BankAtlantic has also realized an improvement to its business continuity capabilities through incorporating complete network redundancy of their core application throughout their enterprise.

Customer service can be greatly enhanced by enabling customers to find detailed information online. For example, FedEx and other shippers allow customers to trace the status of their packages. Beside that, many company using FAQ, which is self help customer support. Some company also provides search engine to save time in searching the company’s product. Usually, this company is selling different models of product. For example, Nokia is providing search engine.

Other than that, E-commerce also can provide product promotion, direct savings, customization, advertising, ordering system, market operations and so on.
